What is cancer?

Cancer is not just one disease, but a collection of unique conditions in which cells in the body become abnormal, then grow and multiply out of control. Although this is true of all cancer types, whether it is breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, lung cancer, or any of several other types, each cancer has unique characteristics and is treated with a unique set of therapies.

How common is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the cancer diagnosed most frequently in North American women. About 200,000 new cases are diagnosed in American and Canadian women and men each year and nearly 65,000 women die from the disease each year in the USA and Canada.

Treatment

Early detection of breast cancer minimizes the likelihood that the cancer has spread, and increases the chances of making a complete recovery. Treatment depends on individual circumstances, such as the rate of growth, how it responds to treatment, and whether or not it has spread.
