Sun Safety: What You Should Know

It's summer! Time for some fun in the sun. The sun is a great asset to our lives - it provides us with light, warmth, and the means for our bodies to make vitamin D. However, the sun's radiation can cause sunburn, eye damage, skin cancer, and premature skin aging. Before you head outside, make sure you know how to protect yourself and your family from the potentially harmful effects of the sun. Find out about sun damage and sun safety.
Sun damage: the basics

The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can result in skin damage ranging from freckling to cancers. There are essentially three types of UV radiation: UVA and UVB, which penetrate the ozone layer, and UVC, which is the most harmful but for now is absorbed by the ozone layer and so does not reach the earth's surface. read more

How do I choose a sunscreen?
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF or "Sun Protection Factor" 15 or higher. Remember to select a waterproof product if you plan to be in the water. read more

Common sun myths

I am wearing sunscreen, so I am completely protected from the sun.
No amount of sunscreen offers complete protection from the sun. Also, people often use sunscreen incorrectly, such as not applying it ahead of time before being in the sun or not re-applying throughout the day.
